塑料它可以是纯的树脂，也可以是加有各种添加剂的混合物，树脂起粘结剂作用。所加添加料的目的是用来改善纯树脂的物理机械性能，改善加工性能或者为了节约树脂。
因此，塑料最基本的物理化学性质是由树脂的性质所决定的。树脂可分天然树脂和人造树脂，后者又称合成树脂。
树脂都属高聚物，这些高聚物有独特的分子内部结构与分子外部结构。高分子内部结构决定了高聚物最基本的物理化学性质；而高分子外部结构则决定高聚物的加工性能和物理机械性能。 聚合物按链之间在凝固后的结构形态可分非结晶型（无定型），半结晶型和结晶型。所以塑料也有无定型和结晶型之分。 结晶型塑料在凝固时，有晶核到晶粒的生成过程，形成一定的体态。如PE，PP，PA，POM，等均属结晶型。 无定型塑料在凝固时，没有晶核与晶粒的生长过程只是自由的大分子链的“冻结”如PS，PVC，PMMA，PC等。
又按其塑料对热作用的反映，可分热塑性塑料与热固性塑料两类：热塑性塑料的特点是加热可以软化，冷却时又重返固态。这一可逆过程，可以反复多次。如：PS，PVC，PA，PP，POM等；而热固性塑料特点是在某一温度下能转变成可塑性熔体，但如果继续提高温度，延长加热时间高分子内部将产生交联作用而固化。再不能用加热方法使其软化到原始状态，不能反复加工。如：环氧，呋喃，氨基，酚醛等。
